Stop Fixing The Same Pain Issues Over and Over By Learning To Address Pain at its True Origins!
This course goes into detail on how to find and correct the origins of pain, in yourself and clients. This is the most important part of what CTB therapists do, and the course will provide invaluable techniques for assessing, analyzing and correcting the perpetuating factors that always make pain return.
CTB manual therapy and self treatment techniques are extremely effective, but the best techniques are useless if the analysis is faulty. Uncovering and correcting perpetuating factors and the body's responses is the key to ensuring that pain will not return after manual therapy or self treatment.
Learn how to stop pain at its source!
Hi - I'm Chuck Duff, Founder of Coaching The Body Institute.
Oddly enough, pain is a mystery to the medical profession. Our medical system is still in the middle ages in terms of understanding pain, which is why we have over 65,000 people a year dying of opiate overdose in the US.
Sadly, a high percentage of addicts begin with a prescribed opiate, and much of it is unnecessary. Pain is assumed by the medical establishment to always be a product of injury or disease, but this is just plain wrong.
Heathcare professionals become obsessed with fixing or numbing the "injury". Typical treatments such as NSAIDs, cortisone injections, surgery, strengthening, cold, none of these address the true issues.
I’m a trigger point therapist, and it has been demonstrated in repeated studies as well as my own 15 years of clinical experience that the vast majority of pain is from muscles that have developed trigger points.
The amazing human body doesn't just break and develop trigger points. One of the key insights of CTB is that the body employs strategies to protect itself and stabilize joints, using trigger points to accomplish this!
The long-term downside of this strategy is that trigger points produce pain and limit mobility. By understanding how and why the body does this, we can correct the source instability and postural issues, resolve the trigger points, resolve the pain, and keep it away! That's what this course is all about.
Trigger Points: Extremely Common and Easily Addressed
Trigger points, which are actually responsible for most pain, are small areas of stagnation in muscle tissue that develop in response to chronic or acute stresses on muscles.
They aren’t injuries, but they commonly send pain to other areas (pain referral) in a way that can feel very much like an injury. This fools everyone – doctors, PTs, most practitioners.
While the pain can be severe, trigger points are fairly easy to correct with manual therapy or self-treatment. For long-term pain relief and prevention, identifying and correcting the source perpetuating factors is key.
Example: "Trochanteric Bursitis
If you go to the doctor with localized pain on the side of your hip, the doctor is very likely to tell you that you have "trochanteric bursitis." Meaning that a sac over a bone in your hip became inflamed for some unknown reason. Somehow, your body just broke.
It seems obvious and tempting to blame the problem on the structures and "injuries" near the site of the pain – however, this is almost never the true cause. And it's really a guess—the doctor isn't going to cut your hip open to see if the bursa is actually inflamed (and that is a good thing).
Trochanteric bursitis is what Travell and Simons call a "garbage diagnosis." Medical people don't generally know that this type of pain is generally referred pain from a muscle, so by default they assume disease or injury at the site of the pain.
As CTB therapists, we know that the tensor fascia latae (TFL) muscle refers pain exactly to that area, and is generally what causes this pain. It's an important little muscle, that often gets overloaded.
But why would it get overloaded if you're not doing intense athletics? In this Pain Hacker's Guide: Finding the Origins and Perpetuators of Pain eCourse, we show you how to analyze and correct the factors that are chronically stressing this muscle in every day normal movement; foot hyperpronation and leg length discrepancy.
Analyzing and Correcting Perpetuating Factors: The Key to Pain-Free!
After resolving hundreds of lower body and upper body problems in our clinic, we have identified the five perpetuating factors that commonly setup pain:
- Foot hyperpronation
- Effective leg length difference
- Hemi-pelvis difference
- Anterior (head forward) posture
- Breathing dysfunction
And we have refined, over many years, our assessment methods and corrective measures.
In addition to learning how the perpetuating factors setup common pain problems, you will learn how to accurately assess and adequately correct for these factors in yourself and others.
Included in the course are detailed videos demonstrating how to assess yourself and clients. These assessments and corrections are the key to remaining pain-free!
Does your pain, or your client's pain keep coming back...? Learn to correct the perpetuators for lasting relief!
Course Sample: Analyzing Leg Length Discrepancy
This online course incorporates our decades of clinical experience in treating pain using our Coaching The Body™ method. We have great success in treating pain (for many, many diagnoses) because we understand how to trace pain to its source. And the source is almost always one or more of the five perpetuating factors we have identified.
In this course, we guide you with detailed lecture and demonstration videos (4.5 hours!) as well as written material to maximize your success in understanding and correcting the pain perpetuators in yourself and your clients.
This video is an edited sample from the lateral asymmetry section of the course. It consists of portions of the analysis lecture, client assessment demonstration and self-assessment demonstration for effective leg length discrepancy.

Meet Your Instructors
This course has been designed by two respected teachers with many years of clinical experience helping clients with pain. They have refined the assessments, corrections and teaching methodology over many years.
Chuck left a lucrative (but soul-sucking) career in software development to pursue training in traditional Thai massage. He opened his first clinic, Thai Bodywork, in 2001, and quickly became frustrated with the lack of understanding in traditional methods for deep, long-term pain relief.
During his decades-long quest to understand the true nature of pain, he rediscovered the forgotten nuances of trigger point therapy, and realized he could integrate it with his training in Thai techniques. He developed Coaching The Body™ through years of research and clinical study, and has been teaching it since 2005.
Chuck's in-person and online teaching has now achieved international recognition as one of the most sophisticated and successful approaches in the world for treatment of pain and dysfunction.
Doug was a yoga instructor (and a musician, and a graphic designer, and a soccer player) with chronic back pain. As long as he was practicing yoga, he wasn’t in pain.
But he found himself unable to help his students with their chronic and severe pain. He felt frustrated by his lack of knowledge in functional anatomy and kinesiology.
Doug explored a myriad of learning opportunities—but after a life-changing experience with Thai Bodywork, he decided to enroll in Chuck Duff’s Level I training program. And we still can’t get rid of him.
Three years later, Doug quit his job in digital publishing to become a full-time therapist and teacher. He’s been teaching alongside Chuck since 2014, and he sees clients at his Aurora, Colorado clinic in addition to his training and curriculum development at CTBI.

Finding the Origins and Perpetuators of Pain: eCourse Contents
Section 1 - Pain Origins Overview
This introductory section explains the revolutionary Coaching The Body understanding of pain, the role of trigger points as the producers of most pain, and how trigger points are setup by the 5 perpetuating factors. Includes 3 videos and downloadable pdf of the presentation slides (39 pages).
Section 2 - Lateral Asymmetry
This section is an in-depth look at the very common yet almost always overlooked perpetuator of unilateral pain, lateral asymmetry. It includes two lecture videos and four detailed demonstration videos of assessing: effective leg length discrepancy (client & self), hemi-pelvis discrepancy (client & self).
Section 3 - Hyperpronation & Anterior Posture
Hyperpronation is a HUGE perpetuating factor for both upper and lower body pain complaints. It is shockingly prevalent in a majority of pain sufferers, and usually inadequately corrected if it is recognized. It distorts posture throughout the kinetic chain and we cover this deep topic thoroughly in nine detailed videos: hyperpronation assessments (client & self), anterior posture, pelvic tilt, correcting with CTB insoles and customizing solutions.
Section 4 - Breathing Dysfunction & Head/Neck ROM
Breathing dysfunction is pervasive in our stressful culture. The most extreme condition is paradoxical breathing, but there are more subtle manifestations that are surprisingly common. This section teaches one how to evaluate breathing and understand how dysfunctional breathing is the root cause of many upper body pain complaints. Forward head posture and head/neck ROM assessments are also covered. Includes 2 lecture videos, one assessment video and a head/neck ROM assessment guide (downloadable pdf).
Overview: CTB Hyperpronation Insole System
Foot hyperpronation is a very common perpetuator of pain, all sorts of pain, in the lower body and upper body including: headaches, neck pain, shoulder pain, back pain, hip pain, knee pain, plantar fasciitis and various other medical diagnoses.
When the foot and ankle lack stability, there are repercussions throughout the entire kinetic chain and postural distortions develop.
Foot hyperpronation is recognized as problematic by the medical community, but its role in pain conditions is generally undervalued, poorly understood and inadequately corrected.
I searched for years to find a corrective product that worked...I finally gave up the search and created my own products that work perfectly with the CTB system of analysis and correction.
The CTB Hyperpronation Correction System is the culmination of many years of research, experimentation and clinical experience with what really works.
Each insole kit includes:
The CTB Hyperpronation Correction System is a perfect compliment to this course.
