Most of us grow up believing that pain is a direct and determinate result of disease or injury. If you hit your thumb with a hammer, it hurts.
When pain becomes chronic, the central nervous system (CNS) has ratcheted up its sensitivity, to the point where even the most benign stimuli can create a pain response.
Many therapists and non-bodyworking-professionals know something about "trigger points." As in—a trigger point = a 'knot' in a muscle, that sends pain somewhere else.
Most people don't think of the feet and ankles as potent instigators of pain elsewhere in the body. I know I didn't when I started out. But 15 years of clinical observation have made it abundantly clear to me.
